The Best Indoor Air Quality Solutions In Malaysia

What is Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)?

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) describes how indoor air can affect your health, comfort, and lifestyle. IAQ encompasses several variables such as temperature, humidity, the presence of mould, bacteria, or viruses, how good your ventilation is, and exposure to other chemicals. IAQ is also a measurable metric used to measure indoor air pollution to mitigate its risk to a home or building’s occupants.

In recent years, especially with the outbreak of Covid-19, IAQ becomes an important metric especially as Malaysia continues to recover from the pandemic. The Industry Code of Practice on Indoor Air Quality 2010 (ICP IAQ 2010) drafted by the Ministry of Human Resources is the indoor air quality standard for Malaysia. These standards are then emphasized by the Ministry of Health following the Covid-19 pandemic. It involves constant monitoring of a building’s indoor air quality at regular intervals.

Why Poor Indoor Air Quality is Bad for You

Poor indoor air quality has been proven to cause several ailments up to the point it sometimes culminates into what is now known as “Sick Building Syndrome”. “Sick Building Syndrome” describes health problems and discomfort that are experienced by occupants of a specific building but they are not diagnosed with a specific illness or cause.

Some known symptoms include;

  • Difficulty in breathing – which can come in the form of allergies, sinuses, or worse, asthma. This is often caused by viruses, bacteria, dust, and other airborne particles in the air.
  • Rashes and other skin conditions – can be caused by fungus, dust, mould, chemical residue in the air, and other airborne particles.
  • Fevers and flu – such as Covid-19 can be caused by viruses and bacteria either already present in the air or being transmitted by other building occupants.

One factor often overlooked in office buildings is the smell. Of all of the senses, smell is most closely linked to memory and, as a result of this close link, is the most likely to elicit an emotional response, whether positive or negative.

In commercial office buildings, it is vitally important to maintain a level of employee satisfaction. Happy employees are more productive with less absenteeism and this leads to lower rates of staff turnover and ultimately, greater profits for the business.

The look and feel of a business is important – employees feel happiest in a safe and relatively modern environment with all the appropriate tools to take on the challenging tasks that may lay ahead. Nearly 87% of people are not aware that air pollution is worse inside than outside.

Because individuals spend about 90% of their time indoors, the risk for people may be greater from indoor pollution rather than outdoor contamination. Numerous studies have confirmed the importance of good Indoor Air Quality as it relates to employee and occupant health and productivity.

Why is Indoor Air Quality Important

Breathing quality indoor air is critical for good health. Most spend a significant amount of time indoors—either in the home, office or other types of buildings—where gases, chemicals and other pollutants can cause headaches, eye irritation, allergies and fatigue.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is strongly connected to health and wellbeing. Humans tend to spend a large amount of time indoors. Breathable air that’s free of health threatening pollutants can lead to a higher quality of life, lower risk of respiratory illnesses, and a reduced risk of various chronic conditions.
People spend up to 90% of their time in indoor environments. Dust and particles, bacteria, viruses, mold and other pollutants can easily fill the indoor spaces where you live and work. These airborne elements are increasingly resistant to physical cleaning and chemical disinfectants.

How Is Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Monitored?

IAQ can be monitored with specialized sensors installed on commercial air purifiers, or by hiring an indoor air quality service provider capable of doing routine IAQ monitoring. IAQ monitoring involves collecting data on three main criteria. These criteria are;

  • Chemical Contaminants – where you measure the data on the presence of carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, ozone, respirable particulates, and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC).
  • Biological Contaminants – where you measure the total bacteria counts, and the total fungal counts present in the air.
  • Biological Contaminants – where you measure the total bacteria counts, and the total fungal counts present in the air.
  • Ventilation Performance Indicator – which is measured by how high the concentration of carbon dioxide is in the air.

How Biozone Solves Indoor Air Pollution

To truly improve your indoor air quality and reduce indoor air pollution, Biozone has implemented our certified 5-in-1 technology in all our products. This 5-in-1 technology works as an overall process that can eliminate notable air contaminants that affect your indoor air quality.

Our 5-in-1 technology includes;

  •
  • Ozone – our Ozone technology helps eliminate bacteria, viruses, mould, and micro-organisms in the air the moment you turn on our Biozone products.
  • Photoplasma™ – Photoplasma™ is Biozone’s patented technology capable of disinfecting the air with highly reactive and energized oxygen.
  • Negative Ions – our Negative Ions technology can remove airborne impurities and dust while it helps increase the overall process efficiency.
  • Photo-catalytic Oxidation – our Photo-catalytic Oxidation technology can break down volatile organic compounds in the air such as methane and other dangerous chemical contaminants.
  • Germicidal Light (UV) – our UV feature gives another layer of bacteria, viruses, moulds, and micro-organisms elimination for thorough protection.

Indoor Air Quality at Home vs at Commercial or Industrial Buildings

Home and commercial or industrial buildings face different challenges when it comes to implementing proper indoor air quality solutions at their premises. Some of these implementation challenges are;

  • Spatial Differences – Commercial or industrial buildings have a larger space and require multiple IAQ monitoring sensors, ventilation ducts, and air purification systems.
  • Amount of Contaminants – Commercial or industrial buildings have more people coming in or out compared to residential homes. It adds to the type and amount of contaminants present in the air.
  • Specialized Needs – Depending on the type of commercial or industrial buildings, there might be specialized needs required to satisfy its occupants’ as well as spatial needs such as elevator sensors and air purifiers or hypoallergenic features.
  • Areas at Risk – At home, risky areas are normally only entry points but for a commercial or industrial building, risky areas can include refuse rooms, public washrooms, and other spaces.

How Biozone HVAC Systems Helps You

HVAC systems can introduce chemical and biological contaminants from the outside air into indoor environments. These contaminants can actually foul the HVAC equipment cooling coil and drain pan, from where contamination can spread through the ventilation system in increased concentrations, exposing the occupants. Chemical and biological contamination can not only make exposed occupants sick, but they also decrease the efficiency of the HVAC system costing building owners and operators thousands of dollars per year in unnecessary energy costs.

BioZone Scientific’s customized Indoor Air Quality solutions eliminate the problems by eliminating contaminants from the HVAC system. The result is that people stay healthier and the HVAC system is more energy-efficient, saving thousands of dollars in energy costs.
